Quick Thoughts || Why’s it so hard to say NO?

I envy toddlers… So brave… So fearless… So confident in themselves… Why can’t we be like toddlers?

They know exactly what they want and they go for it. They know exactly what they don’t want and stay away from it. The shout out the word NO when they don’t want something or when a person does something they don’t like…

How innocent they are and if only I could find a way to tell them that a few years down the line, this word which they say with so much emphasis and conviction, will become one of the hardest words to say… and I wonder why?

Many times we know a person isn’t good for us, we know the job isn’t right; We know this collaboration will not be beneficial in anyway, we know one thing or the other has no benefit what so ever to us or towards achieving our life goals and yet, we fail to say the simple word that can save us SOOOOOOOO much stress – We fail to just say, NO.

You know what’s even more amazing? Most times we can actually see the situation going down hill even before it begins; But there’s always this little tiny part of our brains that says to us, maybe… just maybe it won’t be as bad as you think it would be; and while that’s true, sometimes your inner gut is right. That same gut you had as a toddler that made you so brave and decisive in doing what was best for you, we now somehow find a way to suppress it… and you know why? It’s because we’re so bothered about not offending people. We don’t want to offend people or be in conflict with anyone. We don’t want to disappoint anyone and so because of this, we say yes when we know, we should say NO.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying don’t be considerate about people’s feelings. I’m not saying don’t compromise when possible, but never ever, EVER! do it at the expense of yourself.

Don’t go into a situation that you already know will be bad just because you can’t say NO and you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. It is no news that we all want to feel accepted but ask yourself, at what cost? Think about it…

All that said, I’m actually a culprit of this same crime… I find it extremely difficult to say the word NO too but you know what? It’s time to think about Demi first… It’s time for you to think about you first!

Sometimes be selfish; Do what’s best for you because you can’t give what you don’t have to the ones you love. So if you’re not happy, you can’t make people happy. Energy begets Energy (The engineer in me talking ^_^).

… and before I go, I leave you with this quote by Tony Blair…

“The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes. It is very easy to say yes.”

Beauty || Did you know Makeup Expires?

[Post originally written March 2015 by Demi Akin]

Have you ever wondered if make-up expires? I’m wondered the same too at some point in my life and I’m here to tell you that yes! However, you’ll probably pick up a product now and look all over it, wondering where exactly the best before date is right?

Take a minute to look at your product again. The truth is, you probably wouldn’t find a best before date but what you will find is a little round container logo with an open lid and a number on the container.

BINGO!!!

expiry-date

That’s the ‘expiry’ time of your product. It’s not exactly a date but it tells you the recommended number for months for which you should use your product, from the first day you open it up!

You will be shocked at how many products have this icon on them – Shower gel, Mascara, Highlighters, Powders, Lipsticks – you name it! Now, there’s no specific place where this icon is placed. However, you’ll usually find it at the bottom of your product or on the box packaging. It may also be under a label or barcode but sometimes, the logo is quite small and illegible. If you find yourself in such a situation, but really want to know its ‘expiry time’, I advice you check out the company’s website or ‘uncle’ google.

In my personal opinion, I really feel this time frame is just a recommendation as I’ve been using the same contour kit since 2015 and it still looks fine and I don’t react to it – but then again I could be wrong. Anyways, now you know this little piece of information and the next time you open up a new product, be sure to note down the expiry date.

DSC_0017

Yep! It’s official; I’m in love with T-shirts. So it’s only natural that I have a DIY tutorial on how to tweak your T-shirts for the summer and here are 3 ways you can easily get a ‘banging’ T-shirt for the season!

#1. Ankara Pocket T-shirt

What you’ll Need

A plain T-shirt

Some Ankara Fabric

Heat bond web

A pair of scissors

An Iron

Step 1

Place your shirt flat on your work surface

DSC_0024

Step 2

Cut out your Ankara Fabric to the shape and size you want your pocket to be, ensuring it’s slightly bigger by 2 cm all around DIY Ankara Pocket Shirt

Step 3

Fold the cut out fabric in on itself to create hems; This is why you make it bigger by 2cm.

Once you’re done folding, iron it down to hold the shape

Step 4

Next, place some heat bond all around the edges of your pocket fabric and iron it down to fix it in place.DIY Ankra T-Shirt 4

#2. Lace Detail T-shirt

What you’ll Need

A plain T-shirt

Some Lace trimming

Heat Bond web

An Iron

Step 1

Place your lace along the edge/side you would like to add the detail (For me, it was the collar). Once you’re happy with the placement, cut away any excess.

Step 2

Take some heat bond web and cut it into little pieces. Place these pieces along the pattern of your lace to mimic the design. This is to ensure that when you iron your lace down, every bit of the lace is securely fixed onto your shirt!

Once you’re done cutting all the pieces, place them UNDER your lace and move to the next step!

Step 3

As already suspected, the next step is to iron this down in place and voila!

Final Outcome!

#3. Pearl Embellished T-shirt

What you’ll Need

A plain T-shirt

Some Pearl Beads

A Needle

Some thread to match your T-shirt

A Marker

Step 1

Place your pearl beads on your shirt and arrange them in the pattern or order you want

Step 2

Take your marker and mark small dots on the spots you placed your beads. This will help you remember where to place them in the next step

Step 3

Using your needle and thread, sew your beads down on your marked points and you’re all done!

DIY || Glitter Phone Skin

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to High Street Mania and if this is your first time visiting my blog – WELCOME! I hope you come back again! ^_^

DIY Glitter Phone Case-2

Today I reveal to you the secret behind my glittery phone skin – one of the most interesting things I discovered this year and surprisingly its super easy to do! Phone skins and cases are something I’m always experimenting with but so far, this has to be my favorite. The most interesting thing about this is that it actually takes no effort on my part and all I need to do is buy the skin colour and type I want, stick it on and that’s all. The glittery phone skin comes like a sticker which you can apply easily at home and it also comes off easily and doesn’t damage your phone AT ALL! However, the only downside to it is that once taken off it’s not reusable but anyways, enough rambling let me show you just how I transform my phone and the application process involved.

All you’ll need are

Your Phone

Phone Skin sticker – You can get this on Ebay or Aliexpress (Seller I got mine from here!)

Step 1

Clean your phone properly.

Step 2

Peel off the phone sticker from the transparent film and stick it on to your phone. The sticker comes pre-cut for all the coloured areas of your phone so just apply the appropriate sticker to the right part.

Note : The smaller pieces and edges do not stick on easily and so you will need to apply some heat using a hair dryer to melt the glue before sticking it on.

DIY || Pom Pom Scarf

Let’s just say I’m on a DIY Streak shall we? I don’t think I’ve ever posted two DIY posts back to back but for some reason my DIY senses are tingling a lot these days so yeah… Let’s jump right into today’s post!

You would expect that after spending 6 years in the UK, surviving through main winter and mini winter (a.k.a British summer) scarves will be one of the accessories I am familiar with. However, it was not until recently that I discovered how fantastic these accessories are and how much pizzazz they can add to your look. It was this new-found love for scarfs that drew me to this super easy tutorial + I really wanted something with pom-poms!

So here’s how I made my Pom-Pom scarf in 4 easy steps! But first… a list of things you’ll need :

A Plain scarf – It could either be a new one or one you already own or just a piece of fabric!

2 meters of Pom-Pom trimming

Some sewing pins

A sewing machine

A pair of Scissors

DIY pom pom scarf

Step 1

Using your sewing pins, pin your pom-pom trimming along one edge of your scarf.

Step 2

Securely attach your trimming to your scarf edge by sewing it in place with a sewing machine. You can also use a needle and thread if you have the patience and time!

Step 3 (Optional step to be done under adult supervision!)

Lightly burn the edges of your pom-pom trimming to ensure the ends don’t fray

Step 4

Rock your scarf all around town! 😉

Told you it was easy!

Hope you liked this short and sweet tutorial!

P.S. – How many other things can you add a trimming to?

DIY || Yarn Pom Pom Flip Flops for less than N500 (£2)!!!.

DIY Pom Pom Flip Flops-2

Hi Everyone!

Welcome back to my blog. Today I have another Flip Flop DIY Tutorial for you! The first one I created a while back was inspired by spring and no this one wasn’t inspired by summer but I just thought I’d say something interesting lol. Anyways, I spotted a similar pair of flip-flops on another blogger, Valerie of Veefinition.com, couldn’t resist how cute they were and I decided to make a pair for myself. Obviously, I could have just opted to buy them but why spend N1,000 (Asking price in the market) on a pair of flip-flops when I can make them by myself for N450 right? So enough chit-chat, let’s get straight into it but first, here’s a list of a few things you’ll need!

Flip Flops

Knitting yarn

Scissors

DIY Pom Pom Flip Flops

Step 1

Wrap the yarn multiple times round your palm. Wrap it as many times as you like. However, note that this will determine how full your pom-pom is.

Once you’re happy with how full your  ‘pom-pom’ is, cut it off from the main yarn.

DIY Pom Pom Flip Flops-5

Step 2

Next, cut off a medium-sized length of string from the same yarn and tie it tightly round the wrapped yarn.

DIY Pom Pom Flip Flops-8

Step 3

Then cut the yarn as shown below. You may choose to trim and shape your pom-pom to a nice length and shape!

DIY Pom Pom Flip Flops-7

Step 4

Once you’re happy with the shape of your pom-pom, take another piece of string and use it to tie your pom-pom rough the top of your slipper. Do this several times until your pom pom is secured in place.

Once that’s done, repeat steps 1-4 for the other flip-flop and you’re all done!

Hope the tutorial was clear enough ^_^

Until Next Time!

DIY || Floral Cat-Eye Sunglasses.

In the spirit of summer and with a lot of floral thoughts going through my mind #TBPBloggersBrunchNG, would it be out-of-place to have a floral sunglasses tutorial? I mean, it’s perfect timing no? Plus, I had a lot of the ornaments needed for this project just lying around my flat and I decided ‘why not!

So without further ado, let’s jump straight into it!

Here are a few things you’ll need!

Cat Eye Sunglasses – Mine are from Primark! £2

Resin Craft Flowers

Half Pearl beads

Adhesive – Super glue or UHU glue will do

A piece of paper

Tooth pick or Thin object – To pick up some glue.

Step 1

Squeeze some glue onto a piece of paper. Then use your toothpick or any instrument of your choice to apply some glue to the back of your flower (you may find it easier to apply the glue straight onto the flower depending on the kind of glue being used).

Step 2

Place the flower with glue on it, to the frame of your glasses.

Step 3

Continue this process with all other ornaments and arrange as you please!

Step 4

Once you’re complete with the ornament arrangement and you’re pleased with the design, leave your sunglasses to dry completely and they’ll be ready to rock on streets!

See the outcome below!

Hope this helps!
