The moment I saw this black and white grid shirt-dress at primark, it was a definite Yes! and I knew just how I was going to style it as only one person came to mind – Janelle Monae

Every lover of style has someone they admire – whether you know it or not, whether you accept it or not, every style lover has a style icon… or maybe even more than one. Anyways, as the title of this post suggests, Janelle Monae is one of my style icons for a lot of reasons. From her hair, to the detail of every outfit she puts on, the simplicity of her makeup and her music as well – I love it all!

Although I’m not completely drawn to futuristic styling, I love how simple and coordinated Janelle’s style is. If you know about  Janelle Monae then you’ll agree with me that it is a fact that her wardrobe is stocked with items that are either black – or – white. However, every now and again she adds the occasional splash of colour featuring red, royal blue, or gold accents. So for my Janelle Monae inspired look, I chose red anf gold as my splash of colour!

Surprisingly, putting together this look and still staying true to who I am – a High Street Freak and bargain hunter – was quite easy. Over the past weeks I searched for all the various items that would cement this outfit into a solid look and I must say I am quite pleased with the outcome – the outfit cost me just a little over £40 with the dress being the most expensive piece!

Apart from the fact that Janelle Monae  inspired this particular look, I am also at a stage in my style journey where most of the items I seem to be lusting after are either black, white or red – and you know what!? I’m loving it! The styling possibilities  with these 3 basic colours are endless and I can’t wait to explore more of these fabulous colours!

So that’s it! THE MONAE… My interpretation of Janelle’s style but before I go… What do you think of this look?

Did I nail it or nah? I think I did! ^_^

P.S. The Fringe Box Clutch is a DIY by ME! Watch out for the tutorial later this week!
